Chapter 25 - Isla

The next day, there were two black trash bags waiting for trash day by the front door, and Isla had only finished cleaning her father’s study after lunch. Many of the papers were copies, scans of book pages. It appeared there were three stacks of books and papers, organized by her father. One pile was useless records and didn’t relate to his unidentified search; one pile, the smallest one, had information that pertained to the search; the last pile was a mismatch of sources, so seemed to be the stack her father hadn’t gone through yet.

Isla went through the unread stack, skimming through the table of contents and indices for anything that stuck out to her. Local history, references of the late 1700s, etc. There were only three sources that felt useful, so the rest went to the large pile of junk. She placed all the junk items against the wall by the window, but organized it so the light came through from outside. Turning around, she couldn’t help but smile.

Previously cluttered, the room was no longer an eyesore. The red Persian rug could be seen, as well as the hardwood floor on the edges of the floor. The “keep” pile fit perfectly next to the desk, reaching almost the top of it. Later, Isla would donate or sell the books, but not right now. This was a time to clean.

Well, it was now time to rest. Dust and sweat clung to Isla’s clothes and skin, and she needed to take a break from all the reading and thinking she did while cleaning. She still smelled of the sea, as well as three days of not bathing, so she went upstairs. After a mindless, quick shower, she pulled on an oversized sweater and black leggings, and went back down to the study. She just wanted to see the progress and it made her feel giddy and weightless.

Her stomach growled, so she stepped out of the room and closed the door. When she walked into the kitchen, the happy feelings in her chest deflated. There was so much more cleaning to be done in here, and in the living room, and all the rooms upstairs. Not to mention the closet.

It had taken her hours to go through her father’s study. How long would it take to finish the rest of the house? She was exhausted, her brain was foggy, and her back muscles ached. The shower had been helpful but didn’t give her the relaxation she had sought.

The first thing she needed to do was take care of the stereo. When she had arrived home, she had set it down on the dining room table and forgotten about it. Now, she pushed it against the wall, wondering how bad it would be to leave it there as a decoration piece. The front display was smashed from the fall. It couldn’t be used as a radio, and it was manufactured right before CDs became popular.

It played music by tape. Opening the cassette player, Isla saw the rectangular object.
